No matter what legitimate cause people are demonstrating for—whether against the AfD party convention or government budget cuts across the board—the German Hamas propagandists remain largely unchallenged as they spread their anti-Semitic hate speech directed at Israel. Anti-Semitic incitement at progressive, worthy-of-support events—which has existed in Germany on a scale that should not be underestimated since 1967, and in some cases even earlier—is tolerated in practice and not truly challenged in substance. That needs to change! This concerns so-called “anti-Zionist” slogans ranging from “Kill the Zios” to “Israel is our misfortune” and the like. But even among people who haven’t been incited—whether young people or older adults—who are actively fighting against Nazis or within the labor movement, there is uncertainty regarding the substance of the issue when “Zionism” is discussed. We want to engage in genuine discussion and, to begin with, clarify our position here.

Every year on February 13, there is a “commemoration” ritual marking the bombing of Germany by the air forces of the anti-Nazi Allies, and in particular the bombing of Dresden in February 1945. In addition to the “official” rituals featuring a human chain, over 1,000 Nazis (protected by more than 2,000 police officers) marched through Dresden this year, facing off against over 3,000 demonstrators who sought to prevent the march. The Nazis speak of the “bombing holocaust.” One banner reads: “Yesterday Dresden – today Gaza.” There is indeed ONE important connection
here: Anyone who today fundamentally opposes the bombing of Hamas positions because civilians are also affected has no problem “fundamentally” opposing the bombing of Germany or Dresden. After all, civilians were affected by that as well. Regardless of all the nuances that certainly deserve consideration: Here lies a common root of the revisionist propaganda against the war waged by the anti-Nazi coalition and today’s anti-Israel propaganda, which exerts its influence even
within the ranks of sincere anti-fascist forces.
